Investigation Launched Into 'Fight Night' Trouble

An investigation has been launched after trouble erupted amongst spectators at the Martin Rogan vs Tyson Fury title fight held in the Odyssey Arena in Belfast at the weekend.

It is understood that a ringside brawl, including up to 40 people, saw the police called to the arena on Saturday night.

Smaller pockets of drunken fights also broke out in other parts of the arena and several security members were injured trying to control the trouble. Their injuries are not believed to have been serious.

CCTV footage is being examined as part of a police investigation into the crowd trouble.

Sinn Fein MLA and former boxer Alex Maskey has described those involved as non-boxing fans and said they are a bad image for the sport. While City councillor Jim Rodgers said that the brawl was an "absolute disgrace".

The odyssey Arena said that a review will be carried out to help prevent violence at future events and a spokesman said: "Nobody wants to see sport marred in this way."

Following the trouble calls have been made to ban alcohol at similar events.
