Parking Fines To Increase By 50%

The penalty for illegal street parking in Northern Ireland is set to increase by as much as 50%.

It was revealed today that the maximum fine would increase from the current levy of £60 to £90.

NI Road's Minister Danny Kennedy said that this move follows a significant increase in the amount of illegal 'on street' parking in the last year.

He also said his decision to increase penalties to £90 would still allow law-breakers who paid early to pay a reduced fine of £45.

Currently if the law-breaker pays their fine early they are not charged the full £60 but a half-price fee of £30.

Mr Kennedy said the aim was to ensure that drivers obeyed the rules of the road.
