Man Arrested In Connection With 'Axe' Murder

A man in his 20s has been arrested in connection with an 'axe murder'.

The 22-year-old man has been arrested by police investigating the murder of John Mongan four years ago.

Mr Mongan, a prominent member of the travelling community, suffered 40 to 50 injuries thought to be caused by two bladed instruments. He sustained extensive multiple injuries which resulted in him bleeding to death.

The pathologist said that some of the injuries were inflicted with a knife while others may have been caused by a bladed weapon such as a machete, hatchet or axe.

He was killed in front of his pregnant wife and his seven-year-old daughter at their Fallswater Street home in west Belfast.

Previously three men were arrested and convicted of the murder. Christopher Patrick Stokes was sentenced to 20 years for the murder and Edward Gabriel Stokes to 22 years while Martin Stokes must serve at least 16 years imprisonment.
