MINISTER HANDS OVER KEYS TO REVAMPED HOSPITAL
THE Minister for Health and Social Services and Public Safety, Ms Bairbre de Brun MLA, has officially handed over the keys of Phase One of the new Royal Victoria Hospital (RVH) which will be ready to take its first patients on July 2 2001.
Speaking at the new RVH, the Minister said: “I am delighted to perform the official handing over of the keys to the ceremony. I want to pay tribute to all the many people involved in the creation of this magnificent building.
“Of course, buildings alone do not make good hospitals. That requires skill, dedication and commitment of our medical, nursing and other health care staff. It is their talent and energy that breathes life into the bricks and mortar. It is their professionalism and dedication which underpin the high standards of care which are recognised and respected throughout the world.”
The first four floors of the building have been completed ahead of schedule with first operations expected to be performed by August 10.
The new seven floor block will replace the hospital’s Nightingale wards, and should be fully operational by Christmas.
Fourteen local artists have been involved since the initial stages in creating a series of works for the new building in recognition of the role of high quality environments in aiding recovery.
The project has been completed ahead of schedule and within the budget. (CD)
