NORTEL WIN EXPORTER OF THE YEAR AWARD
NORTEL Networks have been presented with the Northern Ireland Exporter of the Year award at a gala dinner and presentation in Belfast.
Presenting the top award to Nortel Networks, Sir Reg Empey, Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Investment, said: "Increased sales to over £1 billion and a trebling in exports over the past three years to highly competitive markets in North America, Asia Pacific and Europe made this excellent company an obvious choice for the independent judging panel."
Paying tribute to the other award winners, Sir Reg said: "These and other ambitious companies helped to push exports of manufactured goods to a new record of almost £4 billion in 1999-2000, a 14.2 per cent increase on the previous year.”
The Minister said that he was immensely encouraged by the performance of smaller firms in the awards: "I hope that the achievements of tonight's winners, particularly the locally-owned businesses, will encourage many more companies to explore growth opportunities by taking part in the export services offered by Trade International and LEDU within the framework of their new joint programme."
Five other companies received category awards, nine were highly commended and 10 were shortlisted by a team of judges from the business community headed by Sir David Fell, Chairman of Northern Bank.
The other awards were presented by: Timothy Quin, President, Northern Ireland Chamber of Commerce and Industry; Dr Alan Gillespie, IDB Chairman; Ian Reid, General Manager UK and Ireland, British Airways; Leslie Ross, IDB Chief Executive; and Eamon McElroy, LEDU Chairman.
Awards were presented for: Tradeable Services Exporter of the Year - FM Environmental Ltd, Newry; Small Business Exporter of the Year - Meridian Medical Technologies Ltd, Belfast; First Time Exporter of the Year - Amtec Medical, Antrim; E-Business Exporter of the Year - Blackstar Associates Ltd, Belfast; and Strategic Alliance Exporter of the Year - Andor Technology Ltd, Belfast.
The awards, now in their ninth year and organised by Trade International Northern Ireland with sponsorship from the Northern Ireland Chamber of Commerce and Industry and British Airways.
The winners are selected on the basis of export performance over a three-year period, this year from 1998 to 2000. (SP)

Rise in NI unemployment figures
The number of people unemployed in Northern Ireland is on the increase according to the latest figures. Labour force statistics released on Wednesday revealed that some 46,000 people are unemployed, a rise of 3,000 on the this time last year.
