UNIQUE UNION EXHIBITION OPENS IN ULSTER MUSEUM

THE Culture, Arts and Leisure Minister Michael McGimpsey has urged Ulster people to come together and share in all aspects of their cultural heritage.

Speaking at the Ulster Museum, where he was officially opening Northern Ireland’s centrepiece exhibition to celebrate the 200th anniversary of the signing of the Act Of Union, the Minister said: "Never before have so many significant artefacts been assembled under one roof to mark an important milestone in our history.

"Among the exhibits on show at this unique exhibition are the actual Act of Union, which has never before left Westminster, and the mace of the Irish House of Commons."

The Minister pointed out that although the administration of the British Isles had changed greatly over the past 200 years, the passing of the Act in 1801 was a momentous event which he said was held dear by the unionist tradition. He added: "However, I believe that this is also an anniversary which Northern Ireland’s two main communities should celebrate together.

"Our Province is now home to a multi-cultural, multi-lingual society where we are all learning how to be more tolerant and understanding of the views of others. I would therefore encourage everyone, regardless of their background, to come along to the Ulster Museum and learn more about the traditions which comprise modern day Northern Ireland."

The Exhibition, to which admission is free, opened to the public on Friday June 15, and runs until 21 September.

A travelling version of the exhibition will be going to the Bank of Ireland Arts Centre, Dublin, in August and to the Royal Gallery at the Palace of Westminster in October.

The roadshow will also visit a number of locations throughout Northern Ireland, including Mount Stewart, once the home of Lord Castlereagh who was one of the chief architects of the Union. (SP)
