Thousands Descend On North Down Beach Party

More than five tonnes of litter were picked up from a Northern Ireland beach after a party at the weekend.

Inspired by the good weather, people spread the word on social networking sites about a party at Helen’s Bay in North Down on Saturday night.

But after about 2,000 people showed up and reports of fighting came in, riot police attended the beach.

Police officers also patrolled train stations and other transport links.

On Sunday morning, Environment Agency staff and local residents worked for five hours to clear the bottles, bags and general rubbish left on the seafront.

They started at 6am and finished at 11am, on another hot and busy day at the popular beauty spot.

Mayor of Bangor James McKerrow said the law against drinking in public places should be more strictly enforced.

He said: "We are not against people coming here. It is a place to be enjoyed but we want to curb the excesses."

Helen’s Bay is ten miles out from Belfast on the shore of Belfast Lough and easily accessible on the train line for Bangor.
