Don’t Risk A River Cool-Off
The Rivers Agency warned that rivers and watercourses can be dangerous and urged people not to “put themselves at risk” by cooling off in them over the summer.
It came after a man died in Glasgow yesterday, after jumping into a waterfall and getting in to difficulties.
Philip Mehaffey, Acting Chief Executive with the Rivers Agency said: “There have been several recent instances involving juveniles jumping into rivers from flood gates and weirs. Over the years, there have been a number of tragedies where people have drowned as a direct result of this type of behaviour. I would urge parents to ensure their children are behaving responsibly and not putting themselves at risk through activities around rivers and watercourses. Likewise for adults, even strong swimmers have experienced difficulties leading to tragic consequences in the past and it is important that everyone stays safe while enjoying this early summer hot weather."
Carjacking In Carrickfergus
A car was hijacked last night in Carrickfergus.
A man distracted the driver by jumping in front of the car on the Woodburn Road at about 10:40pm on Sunday.
She was then dragged out of her car by a second man, wearing a mask, before the men made off in the car.
The car was found on fire on the Loughmourne Road later.
Police would like to hear from any witnesses.
Benefit Fraudsters Convicted in Londonderry
Three people were convicted at Londonderry Magistrates' court for claiming a total of £12,781 in benefits they were not entitled to.
Julie Rodgers (28) of Carnhill, Londonderry claimed Income Support totalling £2,424 while failing to declare employment. She was given an absolute discharge.
Gavin McDermott (39) of Rathowen Park, Londonderry claimed Income Support, Jobseekers Allowance and Housing Benefit totalling £4,368 while failing to declare employment. He was given a four month prison sentence suspended for two years and ordered to pay court costs of £97.
John Leonard (38) of Ard Grange, Londonderry claimed Jobseekers Allowance and Housing Benefit totalling £5,989 while failing to declare employment. He was given a three month prison sentence suspended for two years, 160 hours community service and ordered to pay court costs of £40.
All are also required to repay any outstanding money wrongfully obtained to the Social Security Agency.
