Redeployment Of Strabane Benefits Jobs Nonsensical - SDLP

SDLP Strabane Cllr Patsy Kelly has said the redeployment of jobs from the Strabane Jobs and Benefits office will have a hugely detrimental impact on advice services to people and staff of the organisation in Strabane.

Cllr Kelly said: "The redeployment of these jobs to Derry is totally daft and will lead to further suffering for the people of Strabane.

"It makes no sense whatsoever to remove staff from a benefits office in an area with the highest level of unemployment in the North, particularly at a time when people’s benefits are being cut.

"If this proceeds, the people of Strabane will be left with a reduced service to help them access benefits which will inevitably plunged people deeper into poverty and hardship.

"It will also have a negative impact on staff in Strabane, many of whom are low paid workers, who will be forced to endure extra expenditure and time travelling to Derry.

"The SDLP will be fighting tooth and nail for the retention of these jobs in Strabane and have written to the Social Development Minister, Nelson McCausland, asking him to ensure that the redeployment of these posts does not proceed."
