SIPTU Calls For Long Term Unemployment To Be Tackled
SIPTU has said that the highest priority much be placed on tackling the problem of long term unemployment as new statistics from the Central Statistics Office (CSO) show those out of work for 12 months or more has increased from 7.8% of the workforce in 2011 to 8.9% in the first quarter of 2012.
SIPTU economist, Marie Sherlock, said: "The growing problem of long-term unemployment is the biggest issue which emerges from the latest CSO figures. We have already seen an increase in the numbers signing on for 12 months or longer on the live register. However, figures confirm the enormity of the problem with over 60% of those out of work being without a job for a year or longer.
"The figures also point to an even larger employment crisis than the headline figure of 14.8% of the workforce out of work suggests with a large jump in the numbers claiming to be in part-time work but under-employed."
According to the CSO's Quarterly National Household Survey, some 309,000 people are now out of work. Employment fell by 1% or 18,100 people in the year to the first quarter of 2012, bringing the total number of people in the labour force to 1,786,100.

Unemployment rises but Government upbeat
The latest UK Labour Force Survey, which covers April to June 2005, has shown an increase in unemployment over the last quarter. Over the last year as a whole, however, the number of people in work has risen, unemployment is close to flat, economic inactivity has improved and the number of people on out-of-work benefits has fallen.
