New PSNI Approach To 'Punishment' Attacks
Police today outlined a crackdown on paramilitary style 'punishment attacks'.
They will pump more resources into finding perpetrators, using social networks as well as traditional lines of inquiry, and will work with district policing to "take these attackers off their streets", they wrote in a statement.
Assistant Chief Constable Drew Harris said: "These type of attacks are not a form of justice. Their impact on individuals, families and communities can be severe and yet many turn a blind eye to what is happening in their streets, either through fear, or indifference. Policing has a clear part to play, in reducing the number of these attacks and bringing perpetrators before the courts, but what is also clear to us, is that without the evidence, the victim and witness information, success in detection is limited."
ACC Harris said the incidents had reduced "markedly" in the last ten years but with 79 committed last year they were still "unacceptably high".
He said: "The answer to this does not lie solely with a policing response but I am committed to stepping up our response and ensuring we will play our part to get results. But it will take more than that to rid our communities of this scourge, I am asking others today to get involved with us, to stand up and help those who need assistance and to ensure these attacks and those who carry them out are firmly rejected."
He asked people to use the anonymous telephone line Crimestoppers to report information.

Major Drug Bust In Omagh Linked To INLA
Detectives from the Paramilitary Crime Task Force have made a significant drug seizure in Omagh. Officers searched a van in the Doogary Road area on Thursday morning, 21st November, and recovered a substantial quantity of suspected cocaine with an estimated street value of £750,000.

SDLP issues 12 point plan for safer communities
The SDLP have issued a 12 point plan which it says will lead to safer communities if implemented. Policing spokesman Alex Attwood said his party would be pushing for full implementation of the plan over the next fours within the District Policing Partnerships and the Policing Board.
