Village SOS Funding Available

Country-based bright sparks with community business ideas can apply for grants of up to £50,000 to kick-start their projects.

The money comes from the Big Lottery Fund (BIG) Village SOS scheme to breathe new life into rural communities.

Communities must have less than 3,000 inhabitants to qualify for the grant, and must come up with a business idea to answer a local need.

It could be anything from a community-run shop to a minibus service.

People in Northern Ireland can register at www.villagesos.org.uk where they will find more information and advice about community enterprises, including an online support network. Application forms for the funding are available on the website now.

One County Antrim village received £29,680 last year from the project, which was newly-launched then.

Cloughmills Community Action Team plans to create a micro brewery and run courses in bread baking, wood cutting and weaving, with a view to running a traditional arts and culture centre.

Frank Hewitt, Big Lottery Fund NI Chair, said: "I would urge communities across Northern Ireland to explore this unique opportunity to get funding and support to start up a community run enterprise which will revive their local area and help buck the trend of rural decline."
