Judge Protects Drugs Charge Men From RAAD
A Derry judge has requested to journalists not to publish the addresses of two men up in court on drugs charges.
The unusual request was made to protect the men in the face of RAAD, or Republican Action Against Drugs, which has stepped up its vigilante-style shooting attacks in recent months.
Tensions in the Creggan estate have been high and a Spotlight documentary on the group's violent activities was aired last night on BBC Northern Ireland.
District Judge Barney McElholm presided over the drugs case today at Londonderry Magistrates Court, and called the group 'paramilitary thugs'.
David Robinson, 28, and Craig Inglis, 23, both from the city, are both charged with importing mephedrone, conspiring with others to supply, and possessing it with intent to supply.
They were released on bail of £400 and on the condition that they cannot contact each other.
On July 8 they will appear again in court.
Mr McElholm said: "Although I have no powers, I am asking the press not to publish their addresses. I do not believe those paramilitary thugs out there should have any more help than they already have."
Mephedrone, previously a 'legal high' is a Class B drug that causes Ecstasy-like effects.
