Fermanagh Monastery Island Accessible For Summer
Ferry services to a County Fermanagh island are about to resume for the summer season.
From July 1, a wheelchair-accessible passenger vessel will cross from Trory Point near Enniskillen to Devenish monastic island on Lower Lough Erne.
The island’s monastery dates back to the 6th century and a 12th century round tower is still visible today.
Cost of travel is £3, with a discounted rate of £2 for children, senior citizens and people travelling in groups.
Children under five go free.
Michael Morgan of the Northern Ireland Environment Agency said it was a "very idyllic island".
And Thomas O'Reilly, Chairman of Fermanagh District Council, said: "We are very pleased to hear that the ferry service from Trory Point to Devenish has been re-instated for the Summer season. Devenish Island is one of Fermanagh's iconic landmarks and no holiday in the Fermanagh Lakelands would be complete without a visit to this mystical place."
The Molaise III ferry will run at 10am, 1pm, 3pm and 5pm every day except Tuesday and Wednesday until further announcement at the end of the summer.
Living history guides will start the summer of by interpreting the story of St Molaise on July 1, and visitors will have a chance to 'meet' the saint on other days later in the summer too.
The ferry crossing can accommodate group booking and also sail outside the scheduled sailing timetable by prior appointment via the ferry hotline 077702052873 or by calling Castle Archdale on 028 68621588.

As a scenic cross border transport link remains in jeopardy, a Coleraine Sinn Féin councillor has urged NI Enterprise Minister Arlene Foster to take action to save the ferry. Billy Leonard wants the DUP Minister to play her part along with other Stormont Executive colleagues to save the Magilligan ferry service to Greencastle.
