20-Year-Old Selected As Sinn Fein MLA
A 20-year-old from south Armagh is to become Stormont's youngest MLA.
Sinn Fein has selected Megan Fearon to replace Conor Murphy, who is stepping down due to the party's decision to end double jobbing.
Mr Murphy is also an MP for Newry/ Armagh and left the Assembly alongside four other MPs who were also MLAs.
Martin McGuinness, who was also an MLA and MP at the same time, left Westminster to concentrate on his Deputy First Minister role at Stormont.
Ms Fearon has just finished her exams in politics, philosophy and economics at Queens University.
She has been a Sinn Fein activist since the age of 15 and has worked to raise awareness of drugs and mental health in her area.
She was selected to replace Mr Murphy as an MLA at a party convention on Monday and the decision is due to be ratified by Sinn Fein's ard comhairle (national executive) in a few days' time.
Her predecessor Mr Murphy said: "I am delighted to endorse this bright, energetic and intelligent young woman. Megan will be a welcome asset to the Newry Armagh constituency and I look forward to working closely with her. I know that going into the assembly will be something completely new to Megan and, while this would daunt many of Megan's age, I am confident that she will rise admirably to any challenges set."
