McAreavey Accused's Father Denies Lying To Protect Son

The father of one of the men on trial for the murder of a Co Tyrone newlywed has been accused of lying to protect his son.

Soorideo Treebhoowoon denied lying to the Mauritius investigation onto the murder of Michaela McAreavey.

He said "No, why would I lie?" when prosecutor Mehdi Manrakhan told him he had made up claims that his son Avinash told him his confession had been extracted by police brutality.

Mr Menrakhan said the claim the 52-year-old labourer had made about a conversation with Avinash in a police station had not been mentioned in anyone else's evidence.

He said: "I am telling you you are a witness who came to court to save your son. You can even lie to save your son."

You love your son?" Mr Menrakhan asked.

Mr Treebhoowoon replied: "Yes."

"You would do anything to get your son out of this?"

"Yes I have to get my son out of this."

Former hotel workers Treebhoowoon, 32, and co-accused Sandip Moneea, 42, deny murdering honeymooner Mrs McAreavey last January.

The prosecution claims they attacked her when she caught them stealing in her room, but Treebhoowoon has insisted throughout that he signed his confession solely as a way to escape being beaten up and tortured by police.

Doctors have given evidence showing that Treebhoowoon’s face and abdomen showed no sign of injury the day after his arrest, and a perforation found in his ear two days later was the result of an infection.
