Giant's Causeway Visitor Centre Opens Today

An £18.5m visitor centre opens its doors today at the Giant’s Causeway in north Antrim.

The National Trust building will provide exhibitions, a café and shops to tourists after the original centre burnt down in 2000.

Trails around the site have also been updated and a new cliff-top walk is accessible to people with disabilities.

A park-and-ride facility will help transport visitors from Bushmills.

The centre's design was inspired by the Causeway’s hexagonal basalt stones but it is hidden from the landscape by a grass roof.

Exhibitions, open between 9am and 9pm, tell the scientific story of the rocks' volcanic formation, but also the legend of the giants Finn MacCool and Benandonner.

Entrance to the visitor experience centre will cost £8.50 for adults and £4.25 for children, including a free audioguide in a choice of languages.

The Giant's Causeway has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1986.

Rival bids for building the new visitor centre were given the green light at various times, leading to a legal challenge which, although dropped, held up the construction.
