PSNI Officers Face Disciplinaries Over Shotgun Warnings
Three police officers are facing disciplinary action over their failure to act on warnings about a man who was yesterday convicted of murdering his ex-lover.
Police were warned that Fred McClenaghan had a gun and had made death threats but according to the Police Ombudsman, they did not do enough to protect the public against him.
Marion Millican was shot dead in March 2011 at the Portstewart launderette where she worked and McClenaghan was found guilty of her murder yesterday.
The 49-year-old, of Broad Street, Magherafelt, admitted during counselling sessions that he fantasised about killing the mother-of-four and committing suicide.
The Northern Health Trust passed information about McClenaghan's threats on to the PSNI three months before he shot Mrs Millican in the chest with an antique double-barrelled shotgun.
They were warned of the threats again in January 2011, two months before the murder, by someone who believed McClenaghan had a gun.
The Police Ombudsman's office said officers "did not take appropriate action in relation to a report that a member of the public had a gun illegally and was a possible danger to himself and others."
The Northern Health Trust commented: "While some aspects of process could have been improved, none of these matters would have had a bearing on the tragic outcome."

Man To Go On Trial Over Launderette Killing
A man, aged 52, is due to go on trial accused of murdering Marion Millican. Ms Millican, 51, was shot dead in a laundrette in Portstewart where she worked in March 2011. A shotgun was used in the incident. Ms Millican died at the scene. The accused, named as Fred McClenaghan, from Magherafelt, is said to have carried out the killing.

Four Arrested Following Disorder In South Belfast
Four men have been arrested following public disorder incidents in the university area of south Belfast on Thursday, November 14th. Police responded to a number of offences, including resisting and obstructing police, and assault on police. Three men, aged 18, 20, and 21, have been charged and are due to appear in court in December.
