Policing Board launches £700m strategic plan

The Northern Ireland Policing Board has published its £700 million policing plan which is designed to improve policing in the province over the next two years.

Detailing how the PSNI will provide its service to the community for the next three years, the policing plan also sets out seven detailed objectives for the service to meet during the year ahead.

The seven key policing objectives for the year ahead focus on: crime; public disorder; road traffic collisions; misuse of drugs; encouraging effective distribution of resources; and driving forward the programme of change.

Launching the 2003-2006 Policing Plan, Professor Desmond Rea, Chairman of the Northern Ireland Policing Board, said: “We believe that this policing plan sets objectives, performance indicators and targets for the police that are challenging, yet realistic and represent a significant step forward for ensuring effective and efficient policing in Northern Ireland.

“In producing the plan we have consulted with the community and the PSNI to find out where most police effort needs to be concentrated during the coming year and as a result we have focused on the issues and crimes that affect people’s daily lives.

“The Policing Plan is therefore an essential road map for policing over the next year and an essential tool for the Board, who on behalf of the whole community, will use it to monitor how the police service is doing,” Professor Rea added.
