Sheep Rustlers Strike In North Antrim
More than 200 sheep were stolen from a County Antrim field earlier this month.
Farmers have been urged to be on their guard amid fears the theft is the work of organised sheep-rustlers.
At some point during the Twelfth of July holiday week, 74 ewes, 137 lambs and two rams were taken from a farm at Kilraughts near Loughguile.
Most of the animals were not tagged.
North Antrim MLA Robin Swann said: "This has to be major organised crime that is now being targeted directly at our rural and farming industry. For a farmer to face this size of theft of livestock from his own premises will have significant financial pressures on his operational business."
The stolen sheep, of the Texel, Suffolk and Mule breeds, have not yet been found.
In August 2011, it was reported that there had been a 28% rise in thefts from Northern Irish farms over the previous two years, with equipment and machinery showing up as far afield as Australia and South Africa.
The farmers' insurance company NFU Mutual said thefts of agricultural machinery were running at £3.8m per year.

Rural Crime Cost NI £2.5m In 2022
Rural crime cost Northern Ireland £2.5m in 2022, an increase of 51% on the year before, according to the latest Rural Crime Report from NFU Mutual. The figure follows the UK trend as 2022 rural crime costs across the UK shot up 22% to an estimated £49.5m, up from £40.5m the previous year.
