Coleraine Brothers Win Olympics Rowing Silver

Team GB's lightweight men's four rowers have narrowly missed out on gold.

There were hopes the group would hit the top spot but they have come away with silver after South Africa finished a metre ahead of them

Richard and Peter Chambers, brothers from Coleraine, were in the team.

A gold medal would have made them the first brothers to win rowing gold for Great Britain since the Searle brothers in Barcelona in 1992.

Northern Ireland's last gold medals were won by Jimmy Kirkwood and Stephen Martin in hockey in the 1988 Olympics in Seoul.

Ahead of the race, 22-year-old Peter Chambers said the team was in a "good place" and his brother Richard, 27, said the four men were focused on the race ahead.

Celebrated Olympian Sir Steve Redgrave had predicted gold for the Chambers brothers.

They began rowing at the age of 13 (Peter) and 15 (Richard) on the River Bann.

A screen was erected at Coleraine Baptist Church for supporters from the town to watch the Chambers brothers in the final.

Jeff Bones from Bann Rowing Club said the men were "cool, calm customers".

He said: "Two guys from the one family, from the one club, representing Great Britain in the Olympic final of the lightweight fours. It's unbelievable."
