Police Officers Investigated For Corruption, But Cookstown Still Safe
Two PSNI officers in the Cookstown area are being investigated for alleged corruption.
The Tyrone Courier newspaper reported that the officers have been arrested, released on bail and taken off police duties.
Five other officers from the same team have been moved to other duties.
A full investigation by the Police Service's anti-corruption unit is underway but it is unclear what charges the officers could face.
Assistant Chief Constable George Hamilton said the police service expected officers to act professionally and with integrity at all times, on and off duty.
He said: "Our priority will remain the delivery of a high quality personal, professional and protective police service for the community of Cookstown and the wider community of Northern Ireland."
Sandra Overend, Ulster Unionist MLA for Mid-Ulster, voiced her concerns but said members of the public were safe.
She said: "I was reassured to receive categorical guarantees that the safety of the public has not been jeopardised in any way.
"Cookstown has been the area with the highest crime clearance rate of anywhere in Northern Ireland.
"I am also assured that the rest of the personnel based at Cookstown Station have sufficient support to carry out their daily work.
"All the neighbour community team remain totally in place and the community can continue to contact their local neighbour office, should they require any assistance."
