Jail For Drunk Man After Mum Called Police In
A Derry man has been jailed after his mother flagged down a police car and asked officers to remove him from the house.
Londonderry Magistrates Court was told that police went to the house on Sunday after the defendant's mother told them her son was highly intoxicated and in the house.
Stephen Gillen, 27, of no fixed abode, was upstairs when police entered the house.
He threw himself down the stairs, struggled with police and shouted abuse at his brother when police tried to remove him on his mother's wishes.
Gillen kicked one officer and tried to head butt another in the fracas.
Defence solicitor Paddy MacDermott said that although Gillen didn't have a good record, he had no convictions for assault.
He said his client had been drinking straight vodka and had no memory of what had happened.
Gillen's mother usually stood by her son, Mr MacDermott said, but this time she wouldn't take him back and so he was homeless.
Gillen was jailed for two months and ordered to pay £25.

Man questioned about 1988 murder
A man has been arrested in connection with police inquiries into a murder in 1988. The body of Lily Smyth, 66, was found in her flat at Moveen House in Dunmurry on October 9, 1988. The pensioner had been strangled. A police spokesperson said that a 43-year-old man had been arrested and is being questioned at Antrim Police Station.
