Petition seeks retention of PSNI band
The UUP's South Antrim MP, David Burnside, will present a petition to the House of Commons tonight calling for the retention of the PSNI Band.
The petition, which has been signed by 1500 people from across the province, was in response to Chief Constable Hugh Orde’s decision to stand down the band at the end of this month because of “current pressures” on policing in Northern Ireland. The petition calls on the Secretary of State to rescind the Chief Constable's decision.
Speaking from Westminster earlier today, Mr Burnside said that releasing the band's 28 members for frontline duty was "far out-weighed by the extremely significant and positive influence on community relations they are having".
He added: "At a time when evil actions are continuing to be carried out in Northern Ireland, I find it incredible that the Chief Constable is prepared to preside over the passing of the PSNI Band which is a force for good Community Relations on behalf of the Police."
