Key Michaela McAreavey Witness Interviewed In New Probe

A key witness is being questioned about the murder of a County Tyrone honeymooner, more than a month after two hotel workers were cleared of killing her.

Detectives in Mauritius, led by Police Superintendent Yasdev Callee, started a new investigation into the Michaela McAreavey case the day after the previous trial ended, and are now interviewing a hotel bell boy.

Rajiv Bhujun was a prosecution witness but his evidence was not heard because he was working abroad on ferries at the time of the trial and could not be contacted.

A spokesman said Mr Bhujun was the first person to see the body after John McAreavey found his new wife dead.

Mr Bhujun was working at the Legends Hotel on January 10 2011, the day Mrs McAreavey was killed.

Mr McAreavey told the trial he went looking for her but the door was locked at their suite and he had to get a spare key from reception.

The bell boy accompanied him back to the room.

According to the widower's testimony, Mr Bhujun opened the door and stood aside to let Mr McAreavey into the room first, before turning and leaving.

The bell boy returned to the room after hearing Mr McAreavey's screams for help and stayed with him until help arrived.

Police are also seeking the help of the German authorities in their efforts to trace a German couple who were staying in the hotel.

Mr Bhujun is being questioned as a witness, not a suspect.
