Protestants more confident in Police Ombudsman
Figures released today have revealed that confidence in the Police Ombudsman within the Protestant community has risen to over two-thirds – up 20% on last year's mark.
The Northern Ireland Statistics and Research Agency's report found that Nuala O'Loan's office had impressed the public with its impartiality and efficiency.
Of those polled, 86% understood the ombudsman was independent to the PSNI and 80% believed any matter brought before the office would be dealt with fairly. A further 74% believed that the ombudsman would treat complaints in an impartial manner.
Over 1,200 people were polled between 3 February and 7 March 2003.

Officer 'Justified' In Holding Man's Head Against Window
A PSNI officer was justified in holding a man's head against the window of a police car to prevent him from spitting, according to an investigation by the Police Ombudsman. The man complained that the officer had without warning hit his head against the window and then caused him to choke by continuing to press on his head and neck.

Community support Police Ombudsman's role
The Police Ombudsman's Office has today learned that it has equal levels of support from both Protestants and Catholic communities in Northern Ireland. According to the findings of an Independent survey, over 80% from both communities believe that the Ombudsman's Office is helping to improve the quality of policing.
