Belfast Girl Back In Saddle To Raise Charity Money
A Belfast girl has got back in the saddle after 15 years to raise funds for NI Cancer Fund for Children (NICFC).
Grand Opera House employee Claire Donnelly has conquered her fear and got back on a bike after 15 years to help launch a sponsored cycle from Newcastle to Belfast on September 9.
The 24 year-old who works in the theatre's marketing department, rounded up three colleagues, namely Paddy Gargan, Tony Knocker and Steve Anderson, to take part in the 30 mile cycle. The route will begin at NICFC's Shimna Valley respite centre in the Co. Down seaside town and will finish at the Grand Opera House.
The guys all agreed to sign up to the challenge on the condition that Claire swallows her fear and gets back on a bike.
She said: "I haven’t been on a moving bike in about 15 years and I was pretty petrified to be honest. But I guess if I was asking these guys to take part in a 30 mile sponsored cycle, the least I could do was swallow my fear and get on a bicycle for a bit."
Ahead of the sponsored cycle, the team plans to step its fundraising up a gear by collecting donations at Grand Opera House family fun-days and events. They are also appealing for members of the public who would like to sponsor them to contact NICFC fundraiser, Joanna Black on 028 90 805599.
Joanna said she was delighted the team was taking part in this challenge and wished them the best of luck.
She said: "I hope it goes really well and the weather stays dry for them. The NICFC team is so grateful to the Grand Opera House for its continued support. Money raised through this cycle will go a long way in helping NICFC provide practical and emotional support to children with cancer and their families."
