Minister Farry Congratulates Ferrari Kid
An 18-year-old from Newtownabbey has won a three-year apprenticeship with Ferrari.
Jack McIlroy will be based at Charles Hurst in Belfast, the only official Ferrari dealer in Ireland.
He said he applied for the scheme "thinking never in a million years would they pick me - but they did! Not only will I be training with Ferrari in London, I've also secured a future with Charles Hurst Belfast which I know is committed to developing my career."
Employment and Learning Minister Stephen Farry congratulated Mr McIlroy on making it through a selection process that more than 100 Northern Irish school-leavers tried out for.
Having beat off the competition, the former St Patrick's College pupil will now join 12 other successful applicants from across the UK to start training at Ferrari North Europe’s head office.
He will then be based at the car dealership on a full-time basis and get additional training through ApprenticeshipsNI, which is funded by the European Social Fund.
The apprenticeship will lead to a nationally-recognised qualification accredited by IMI Awards, the leading awarding body for the retail motor industry, along with other qualifications including an NVQ.
Dr Farry said: "Ferrari is one of the world's most prestigious vehicle manufacturers and is committed to developing young people. My Department is proud to be involved in such an innovative, rewarding and exciting scheme and we wish Jack every success for the future.
"Apprenticeships are good for businesses - both large and small."
