Student Home In NI After Year In Poultry Industry 'Down Under'
Bleary-eyed after 49 hours of traveling, Niamh Molloy of Maghera was on her way home through Belfast from a "fantastic" year's work experience in Australia and New Zealand.
Niamh, a past student of St Patrick's College in the County Londonderry town, studies animal science at the Harper Adams University College in Shropshire.
Supported by a grant from animal feed company Devenish Nutrition Ltd in Belfast, she has spent her sandwich year working in the poultry industry down under, with experiences that have redirected her career focus.
"I've had a fantastic year", said Niamh. "The places I've been to, the friends I've made and the things I have done will be memories for life."
"Before I went out I had never been in a poultry house never mind having anything to do with chickens. Now I can see myself making a career in the poultry industry, and going back down under. The people are so friendly."
Niamh spent 6 months with Aviagen in Australia and 6 months with the company in New Zealand.
In Australia Gary Millar from Larne is the senior manager. In New Zealand, her supervisor was John McBride, an ex Harper student, who emigrated to New Zealand from Co. Down in the 1970s.
Niamh's placement in Australia was organised by the Poultry Industry Education Trust. Niamh won a major PIET International travel scholarship towards her costs.
Last week two students, one from Greenmount in Antrim and one from Harper Adams, left for a placement with Aviagen in Australia and New Zealand both with International Travel Scholarships.
