More Jobs Promised For NI

Enterprise minister Arlene Foster has promised more jobs will come to Northern Ireland in time for Christmas.

She made the announcement at Stormont, as the executive discussed how to boost the economy in the wake of yesterday's news that unemployment has risen to 8.2%.

It was also overshadowed by the news that 760 jobs are to go at engineering firm FG Wilson.

Ms Foster said a second meeting would be held at the end of October to deal specifically with the Northern Ireland economy.

First minister Peter Robinson confirmed that he had asked Sammy Wilson, the finance minister, to consider changes to the rates system to assist retailers, and he had asked Danny Kennedy, regional development minister, to consider changing parking charges for the same reason.

He also said that he expected Alex Attwood, environment minister, to consider what role planning could play in rejuvenating the economy.

And employment minister Stephen Farry said: "We have very, very good projections for growth in our economy over the years to come but we have to get through this crisis."
