New Body Scanners On Trial At Magilligan

Magilligan prison is trailing a new state of the art security scanner.

The trial is connected to a long running protest by dissident republicans in Maghaberry prison near Lisburn, who are calling for an end to strip searching.

They argue that electronic scanners like those used at airports are a secure alternative.

Earlier this year, Justice minister David Ford announced trials of two types of scanners.

Historic Derry Building Secured By Sale

One of Londonderry's most historic buildings has been bought by a prominent local businessman.

St Columb's Hall in the city centre has been bought by the Garvan O'Doherty Group.

A spokesman for the Catholic Church which owned the building said the sale would secure its future

The sale required approval from St Columb's Diocese Trust and the Charities Branch of the church both of which have been granted.

Cross Border Operation To Tackle Sheep Smuggling

A major cross-border operation has been carried out into alleged sheep smuggling between Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland.

It took place in Gortnagriffin, near Florencecourt in County Fermanagh, on Wednesday 12 September.

A large number of untagged sheep, cash, cheques, veterinary medicine and animal ear tags were uncovered.

The PSNI said the find was "significant".

NI's Older People To Gain Representation
The public are to be asked what they think about a proposal to create an Older People's Commissioner for NI. Stormont Junior Ministers Robin Newton and Gerry Kelly this week launched a public consultation on the issue. The news came as the Ministers hosted an event for older people to celebrate United Nations International Day of Older People.

'Bouncers' Get More Time For Registration
An anticipated deadline for the licensing of 'bouncers' across NI is to be extended. All in-house door supervisors working in the security industry in Northern Ireland were initially required to obtain a licence from the SIA (Security Industry Authority) by the end of December.

Hoax Security Alerts Close School
Hundreds of Belfast school children have been sent home following a hoax security alert. St Aidan's Primary School on the Springfield Road was closed after the discovery of a suspicious object on the Whiterock Road, which was later declared non-suspicious. Three hundred and fifty pupils were evacuated.
