Cash Boost To Turn Belfast Into Broadband Speed Leader
Belfast is to get a cash injection of £13.7m to transform it into a "digital leader" with ultrafast broadband.
The money comes as part of a £114m pot from central government in Westminster, to be shared out among London, Manchester, Bristol, Cardiff, Edinburgh and other regional cities as well as Belfast.
Culture Secretary Maria Miller said the investment would help provide businesses with ultrafast broadband of at least 80 to 100Mbps.
And Belfast City Council welcomed the move, saying it would be a "catalyst for economic development".
The funding will be pooled with money from other sources.
The total digital investment in Belfast will be nearly £25m as the city council will invest £3m while the private sector will provide a further £8m.
Councillor Deirdre Hargey, chairman of the council's Strategic Policy and Resources Committee, said: "Today's announcement is the result of an incredible amount of work in a short space of time. It is one of the most significant announcements for Belfast and the wider regional economy for some time and is a real game-changer as it will provide a world class digital infrastructure that will attract major foreign investment, create jobs, and provide a platform for local business start ups. It also brings major benefits for communities, residents, tourists and public sector organisations."
The government is planning to allocate another £50m between 10 smaller cities in a second stage of investment.

£1.25m For Belfast Community Projects
20 community regeneration projects across Belfast have received funding totalling £1.25m from the City Council. The funding is part of £5m set aside for the Local Investment Fund (LIF). Just under £1.3m is earmarked each to the North, South, East and West of the city and a further £490,000 allocated for the Shankill area.
