FG Welcomes Kerry Group Announcement
Fine Gael Kildare North Deputy, Bernard Durkan, has said the announcement by the Kerry Group that a record investment in food innovation is to be made in Kildare, with 900 permanent jobs and a further 400 construction jobs being created, is a testament to the hard work of the Government, Enterprise Ireland and the farming communities across the country.
"News that the Kerry Group is to establish an industry-leading global technology and innovation centre in Naas, with the creation of 1,300 jobs between now and mid-2016, is enormous. The €100 million investment will not only have a significant impact on Ireland as a food producing nation, but will have a substantial knock-on effect on the local economy in Naas, wider Kildare and Ireland Inc.
"The building of this centre represents the largest single food innovation investment ever made in Ireland by the most influential food-ingredient company in the world, Kerry Group which happens to be an Irish company, and will further cement Ireland’s reputation as a quality food producer that is leading the way in food innovation, research and technology.
"While multinationals will play a strong part in our recovery, it is critical that we build on the strengths of the domestic economy, such as the agriculture sector, so that we can maximise the number of jobs we can create to get our people off the dole and back to work. Ireland has always been noted for the superior quality of the food we produce and in 2011, a record €8.9 billion in food and drink exports was recorded, underlining the absolute importance of the farming sector, and related industry, to Ireland’s future economic recovery.
"I am delighted that Naas has been identified for the development of this Global Technology and Innovation Centre. I commend the Kerry Group for the stellar work it is carrying out in ensuring that Ireland remains on the map in terms of food production and innovation and to all who were involved in making this project a reality."
