Young Citizens award launched
The search for outstanding young citizens to win a coveted Philip Lawrence Award has been launched.
The awards scheme recognises active citizenship in young people.
This years launch of the awards, which is open to young people from across Great Britain and Northern Ireland, was attended by members of the judging panel including the Duchess of Kent.
Last year in Northern Ireland, the Youth for Youth initiative scooped one of the awards and a £1,000 prize after local young people explored their 'invisibility' within the local political process. The group wanted to get their opinions on devolution and the peace process heard and so they organised two conferences, each hosting 100 young people.
They also lobbied the NI assembly, hosted important officials form the UN and ran workshops for youth both locally and at international events.
Frances Lawrence, widow of Philip, who was instrumental in launching the scheme and who sits on the judging panel, said: "These awards are designed to celebrate the positive contribution young people are making to their local communities up and down the country. We particularly want to recognise those young people that have overcome social adversity to play a prominent role in their neighbourhoods. Three days before his death, Philip wrote. "Every child is capable of greatness."
There were nine winners last year, each winning £1,000 and 2003 nominations are now open to find young people who are taking the initiative to make a positive contribution to their society.
Enquiries about the awards and requests for nomination forms can be obtained by contacting the PLA information office on 020 7512 2100 or at philiplawrenceawards@kidsclub.org.uk
