Bail Refused For Omagh Kidnapper
Bail has been refused to a man who kidnapped a cattle dealer from the Republic of Ireland after luring him to Northern Ireland under the pretence of a business proposition.
The Prosecution is claiming the victim was bound and hooded and held captive in Omagh for up to five days in a £320,000 extortion plot.
It is alleged he was then passed to an armed gang who travelled with the accused from Scotland.
Robert Vevers, 55, of Dunfries in Scotland, faces charges of kidnapping, false imprisonment and blackmail.
Bail has been refused due to the possibility of a perversion of the course of justice.
The court heard how the trip had been organised under the pretence of viewing a meat boning plant near Ballymena in County Antrim.
But when the man arrived, they were met by another man who drove them towards Omagh.
When they stopped at a farmhouse the victim was handed over to a group of men armed with a shotgun and bats.
He was eventually released back in the Republic following the payment of a €100,000 (£80,000) ransom, which had been reduced from the initial demand of €400,000.
Just days later, Mr Vevers was arrested in Scotland, but denied knowledge of kidnapping or the use of weapons.
Nevertheless, the accused was refused bail as a result of the ongoing nature of the investigation and the potential for interference with the course of justice.
The case continues.
