Plastic Bag Tax Jobs For L'Derry
Environment Minister Alex Attwood has announced the creation of ten new jobs for L’Derry via the introduction of a plastic bag tax across Northern Ireland next year.
The city is to be the location for the new team set up to implement the changes when the levy comes into effect in April.
The tax will see shoppers charged 5p for every plastic bag they use, with that amount increasing to 10p a year later. The legislation will require sellers to charge their customers for a wide use of carrier bags, including plastic ones.
The proceeds will then be paid to the Department of the Environment.
Minister Attwood said he refused to sub-contract the jobs into the private sector.
"This is a job best done by the public sector, by civil servants on civil service pay and conditions," he told the BBC.
"Let's do something to collapse the use of plastic and other types of bags by 80-90 per cent which is the experience of the Republic of Ireland in recent years and Wales in the last year and a half."
The Carrier Bag Levy Team (CBLT) will be responsible for looking after collection of the levy and will ensure sellers are implementing the charges.
Retailers will be required to register as sellers of carrier bags before the charge comes into effect in April 2013.
Collection of proceeds will be undertaken on a quarterly basis, with sellers being able to pay online when the first bill is due in July 2013.
