Foster Confirms NI's Green Aims
Arlene Foster told a global energy conference Northern Ireland is aiming for "a more sustainable energy system where much more of our energy is generated from renewable sources."
The Enterprise Minister was speaking at the 4th International Energy Conference in Dublin, where she addressed delegates from over 20 countries.
Speaking during a keynote address, Arlene Foster said: "Northern Ireland has been very active in renewable energy development and the Marine Energy sector is a key area in which we see real economic opportunity.
"Momentum in this sector is building and last week’s announcement by the Crown Estate to award development rights for a 600MW offshore wind project and 200MW tidal development in Northern Ireland waters was a significant milestone."
The aim of the conference is to stimulate collaboration between businesses and research and development centres.
On show were marine renewable technologies, while top industrial players demonstrated the latest technologies in harnessing renewable energy from the sea at the accompanying trade exhibition.
The Minster said: "Today’s event is an important opportunity to reinforce the economic and environmental benefits of offshore renewables and highlight the vast innovation and growth opportunities for local businesses.
"Through the support of Invest Northern Ireland we will continue to help build the capabilities of our SMEs so that they can become viable supply chain partners in this lucrative and challenging environment."
The event was hosted at Dublin’s Convention Centre by The Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland (SEAI) in association with the European Ocean Energy Association.
