Murdered Prison Officer's Funeral Takes Place Today

The funeral for prison officer David Black who was murdered last week is due to take place today.

The 52-year-old father of two was shot as he drove to his work at Maghaberry Prison.

The shooting occurred on the M1 in County Armagh on Thursday.

A private service is to be held at the family home in Cookstown. This will be followed by a funeral at 13:00 at Molesworth Presbyterian Church.

A private burial will take place at Kildress Parish Church.

Police have been searching the area surrounding the church ahead of the funeral.

The BBC has learned that Martin McGuinness will not be attending. Sinn Féin said the Black family had requested that no party members be present, and that the Deputy First Minister wanted to respect their wishes.

So far noone has been charged with the murder of Mr Black.

It was announced yesterday Colin Duffy had been released following his arrest over the shooting.

Prominent republican Duffy, 44, and another 31-year-old man were detained in Lurgan on Friday. The two men have now been released unconditionally, but a 29-year old man was yesterday still being questioned following his arrest in the Irish Republic on Friday.

Gardai arrested the man in County Leitrim and he was questioned in Carrick-on-Shannon.

A vigil is to be held in Belfast today at the same time of Mr Black’s funeral.

It will take place at 13:00 outside the city hall and has been organised by the Irish Congress of Trade Unions.

Due to the funeral of David Black all prison visits to Maghaberry Prison today have been cancelled.
