Poots Praises NI Special Schools
Edwin Poots has praised the work carried out at Northern Ireland’s special schools.
Speaking during a visit to Glenveagh Special School in Belfast, the Health Minister said: "It is heartening to see for myself the devotion and dedication of everyone involved with this school and all special schools.
"This has been a thoroughly enjoyable and uplifting experience for me. Learning disability affects a significant number in Northern Ireland. It is a lifelong condition and many require educational and social support, as well as health and social care, to help them live life to the full."
The Minister spoke to parents and staff about the challenges faced by teachers, pupils and carers. He also met with some of the school’s pupils.
"Improving services and facilities for those with a learning disability is one of my top priorities," he said.
"Glenveagh is indeed a special school where the commitment and participation of families, educationalists and the health professionals - working together - provide a supportive network of experience and dedication for the benefit of the pupils. I know that this is reflected in specials schools across Northern Ireland."
Mr Poots was also taken on a tour to see the facilities available at the school.
He said: "An important development in the last couple of years has been the establishment of an outpatient healthcare and education clinic within Glenveagh. This has been welcomed by both parents and children and enhances the ability of the professionals to deliver a comprehensive and effective service in a child-friendly environment."
