600 Water Service jobs to be axed
Up to 600 jobs are to go within the Northern Ireland Water Service over the next six years.
NIO Minister Angela Smith informed trade unions of her decision yesterday saying it was part of the proposed reform of the water service announced last month.
She added: "We have informed Water Service staff and trade unions that the figure of between 500 and 600 fewer posts has emerged from work on the efficiency programme.
"This will be the subject of further examination in light of the needs of the Service and of affordability. We have highlighted measures to manage the reductions and to minimise the impact on Water Service staff."
The reduction in staff numbers is part of the proposed reform of the water service announced last month.

NIO Minister Angela Smith has restated the need for a "self-financing" Water Service whilst on a visit to the Tullaghgarley Wastewater Treatment Works near Ballymena today. Mrs Smith made her comments after turning the first sod at the extension to the £10.6 million water treatment scheme – which began in 1994.

Work to begin on £80m water mains
The recently announced £80 million Water Mains Project, to upgrade water mains throughout Northern Ireland, will start in Craigavon on Monday. The scheme involves upgrading approximately 76km of pipework, at a cost of £5.5 million, throughout the Craigavon area.
