NI social workers begin two-day strike
Social workers from across Northern Ireland have begun a two-day strike following a dispute over pay and leave conditions.
Around 1,600 members of trade union, Nipsa are taking industrial action today and tomorrow following a breakdown in talks with management on Monday.
Social workers want to close the pay gap with other health service professionals as their wages are failing to attract sufficient people and this is leading to unfilled posts.
The union have warned that additional legislation has also added considerably to the burden of social workers.
A spokesperson for the union confirmed that emergency cover would be provided for the duration of industrial action.
Union’s members plan to take further action later this month and from next week will refuse to work overtime.

Strike action at Aldergrove suspended pending talks
Security staff at Belfast International Airport have returned to their jobs just hours after they commenced strike action following fresh talks between union officials and their employers. Around 100 security staff employed by aviation security firm ICTS went on strike from 4am to 8am on Wednesday May 7 in protest over pay and conditions.

Minister Reacts To Teachers' Union Ballot Threat
Education Minister Paul Givan has responded to the announcement by several teachers' unions that they plan to ballot their members for industrial action over 2024/25 pay. Earlier this year, the Minister provided funding to successfully resolve the long-running industrial dispute over teachers' pay for 2021-24.

Serious Attack On Social Worker Condemned
The Department of Health has condemned an attack on a social workers in Dungannon and paid tribute to the work done by all social workers across NI. The woman suffered serious injuries when she was attacked in the course of her duties last week. The incident, in Dungannon, is now the subject of court proceedings.

Union Confirms Council Strike Action
The union GMB has confirmed its council and school workers are to go on strike next month. The industrial action was voted in by three to one and has resulted in a one-day strike on 10 July. In a statement, GMB said it is in a dispute over pay. The strike will involve staff in Northern Ireland, England and Wales.
