Police Issue Appeal Over Attempted PSNI Murder

The PSNI has issued an appeal to the public regarding the attempted murder of an off-duty police officer and his family at their home in east Belfast on Sunday 30 December.

Detectives from Serious Crime Branch want to speak to late night revellers who got taxis in Belfast city centre that weekend.

Police are seeking information from people who hailed taxis on two separate occasions in the early hours of Saturday and Sunday mornings.

Firstly, officers are seeking to speak to two women who got into a taxi outside Thompson’s Garage at Donegall Square East at around 02:45 on Saturday 29 December.

Police say after leaving a man off in Newtownards, the women were dropped off in the Clonduff estate at the top of the Castlereagh Road in east Belfast.

Officers are also keen to speak to a man who got a taxi from Belfast city centre at around 02:30 on Sunday 30 December and travelled to the Manse Road/Doagh Road area of Mossley.

A statement from the police says neither of these private hire taxis was ordered from a depot, but both were hailed from the street.

The appeal comes as detectives continue to investigate the attempted murder of an off-duty police officer, who was about to leave his Upper Newtownards Road home for lunch with his wife and children when a bomb was discovered under the family car.

Detectives are appealing to these three people to contact them at Ladas Drive on 0845 600 8000.
