Omagh Bomb Men Seek To Overturn Ruling
Two men held responsible for the Omagh bombing in 1998 are seeking to have the ruling overturned by the European Court of Human Rights.
Jailed Real IRA leader Michael McKevitt and Liam Campbell are to challenge the ruling, due reportedly to their lawyers’ inability to cross-examine an FBI spy whose evidence was central to the case against them.
Two other men held responsible for the bombing are preparing for a retrial at Belfast High Court.
No-one was ever criminally convicted of the bombing, carried out by the Real IRA, which destroyed the centre of the town in County Tyrone in August 1998.
29 people were killed, including a woman pregnant with twins.
Four people have been held liable for the attack: Michael McKevitt, a Real IRA leader serving a 20-year jail sentence, Liam Campbell, a farmer from County Louth, Colm Murphy, a Dundalk-based builder and publican and Seamus Daly, from County Monaghan.
They were ordered to pay £1.6m in compensation.
But a decision by the Court of Appeal by Mr Murphy and Mr Daly's challenges to the verdict means they face a retrial which gets under way next week.
Mr McKevitt and Mr Campbell failed to overturn the rulings against them. They are now challenging the original ruling and seeking to have it overturned.
The European Court of Human Rights is expected to make a provisional ruling on the merits of each application by July.

Omagh bomb families lodge £10m damages claim
Lawyers acting for the families of the Omagh bomb victims have lodged documents in the Dublin High Court today indicating that the sum of damages sought will top £10 million. The civil action is expected to be heard in Belfast against Michael McKevitt, 51, Liam Campbell, 38, Colm Murphy, 51, Seamus McKenna, 49, and 33-year-old Seamus Daly.
