Culture Minister Congratulates Armagh Oscar-Nominee
Northern Ireland’s Culture Minister Carál Ní Chuilín has congratulated Armagh-born cinematographer Seamus McGarvey on his nomination for an Academy Award.
The film-maker has been nominated for his work on Anna Karenina, a film adaptation of Tolstoy’s celebrated novel starring Keira Knightley and Jude Law.
The Minister said: "Seamus McGarvey is one of our leading cinematic exports and this Oscar nomination for Anna Karenina is the latest success in an outstanding career.
"This is Seamus's second Oscar nomination for cinematography. He was recognised in 2008 for his work on Atonement, and it underlines how highly regarded he is in the industry.
"He has worked with some of the leading figures in filmmaking, building a body of work which mixes pioneering projects with big-budget blockbusters. Last year Seamus was behind the camera for Avengers Assemble, one of the highest grossing films of all-time.
"Together with our acting talent, not to mention those who work behind the scenes, Seamus continues to be an inspirational figure for all those who want to work in moviemaking."
Minister Ní Chuilín continued: "After the success of Terry and Oorlagh George last year, who won an Oscar for their short film The Shore, it is encouraging that Ireland - particularly the north - continues to be represented at the biggest awards in cinema."
