NI consumer body launch online help

Most shoppers in Northern Ireland do not have a good enough knowledge of their rights and the General Consumer Council has launched a consumer website as part of action to tackle the problem.

The problem was highlighted recently when shoppers were asked “Is it legal for shops to display no refund signs?” Three out of four NI shoppers said yes. But the answer is no - it is illegal.

Consequently, the Council has launched a high profile campaign to advertise its award-winning website at www.consumerline.org. The website is a one-stop-shop for consumer advice and information. It contains information about your rights, how to making a complaint and advice on taking legal action.

The campaign will run on television, radio, buses, shopping centres and poster sites across Northern Ireland for eight weeks and aims to make Consumerline the leading website for consumer information.

Launching the campaign, Steve Costello, Chairman of the General Consumer Council said: “Local consumers deserve a fair deal and the very highest standards of goods and services. We all need a bit of help and advice sometimes and Consumerline has everything consumers need to buy goods and services with confidence.”

The campaign is part of the Council’s Consumer Skills for All programme – a three-year scheme to bring consumer skills to the community.

The programme will target young people, communities and businesses with consumer skills and information.
