Suspicious Package Addressed To Police Chief

Army bomb disposal officers are currently inspecting a suspicious package after being called to a postal sorting office on Castle Street in Strabane, County Tyrone.

Castle Street, Castle Place, Market Street, Railway Street, Lower Main Street and John Wesley Street have been closed and diversions are in place.

The package has been confirmed as being addressed to PSNI chief inspector Andy Lemon.

It was discovered by postal workers at about 09:00 on Friday.

Taxi Driver Fined Over Forged letter

A County L’Derry taxi driver has been fined a total of £1,100 for forging a letter which said his taxi had passed its roadworthiness test.

21-year-old Paul Concannon received the fine at Londonderry Magistrates' Court on 17 January.

The taxi driver was fined £300 for claiming a forged letter had been issued by the Driver & Vehicle Agency (DVA).

He was fined £200 for not having insurance, £400 for using a forged Insurance Certificate, £100 for not having a PSV Vehicle Licence and £100 for not having a Taxi Driver’s Licence.

He also received six penalty points.

The incident began when officers from the DVA stopped a car in L’Derry on 15 January 2012.

Mr Concannon produced a letter which he said proved his vehicle had passed its taxi roadworthiness test.

The document and subsequent Insurance Certificate were confirmed as being a forgery.

Man Sentenced For Punching Son

A L’Derry man has been sentenced to 50 hours community service for punching his 12-year-old son in the head.

The defendant was arrested after his son reported the assault to his teacher.

The attack happened in the boy's bedroom last February, after the man shouted at his son for playing on a computer console rather than doing his homework.

Londonderry Magistrates Court heard the boy's mother tried to pull her husband off her son, but was unsuccessful.

The defendant admitted continually punching his son in the head with a closed fist.

Six Arrests Over Union Flag

Six men have been arrested in connection with violence over the flying of the union flag at Belfast City Hall.

The men, whose ages range from 18 to 49, were arrested following raids in Belfast, Newtownabbey, Carrickfergus and Greenisland.

A mother and her two sons have been attacked at their house in Co Antrim on Thursday. Two masked men attacked the 46-year-old woman and her sons outside their Moss Side Gardens home, near Ballymoney, at about 11pm.

Arson attack on Belfast taxi firm
Police are investigating a possible arson attack at the depot of a Belfast taxi firm. The fire, which was discovered last night, seriously damaged a portable building belonging to Value Cabs at the firm's Glengall Street office. It is understood that investigators are examining video footage from a hidden security camera at the scene.

A new £14 million support scheme for taxi-drivers has been announced by Infrastructure Minister Nichola Mallon.

New Test For Taxi Drivers Introduced
A test for new taxi drivers is to be introduced later this week, it has been announced. From 31 October, new taxi drivers will be required to pass a Taxi Driver Theory and Practical Driving Test, the DOE has said. The test will affect new entrants to the industry.
