PSNI Appeal After Armed Robbery

Detectives in Newtownards are appealing for information following an armed robbery at a post office in Greyabbey.

At about 10:30 on the morning of Mon 4 February two masked men entered the shop in the Main Street area and threatened staff with a screwdriver.

They then made off with a substantial sum of money in the direction of North Street or Church Street.

It is believed the gang then escaped in a maroon or brown coloured car that may have contained more men.

Staff at the post office are uninjured, but badly shaken by the ordeal.

Witnesses are asked to contact detectives at Ards on 0845 600 8000.

Police 'Tasering' Justified

Police in L’Derry were justified in 'Tasering' a man in August 2011.

This was the finding of the Police Ombudsman regarding an incident at the junction of Lone Moor Road and Eastway in the city, where a man was "acting aggressively" with two knives.

When he was approached by an officer, Police say the man quickly raised the knives and moved towards him. The officer then 'Tasered' the man, fearing for his own safety.

The man was then arrested.

The ombudsman said the use of the Taser was "justified, necessary and proportionate".

L'Derry Woman Charged With Disposing Of Handgun

A 21-year old woman has been charged with perverting the course of justice by disposing of a handgun.

Caoimhe Villa, from Earhart Park in L’Derry, has appeared at Londonderry Magistrates Court.

The gun was a potential piece of evidence in a police investigation.

The incident happened in January 2012.

She was released on her own bail of £500 and is due to appear in court later this month.

Detectives Investigate Belfast Armed Robbery

Detectives in north Belfast are investigating an aggravated burglary at a flat in the Whitewell road area on 4 February.

The incident occurred at about 12:30 when two unknown men entered the property and allegedly threatened the 31-year-old householder with a gun and hatchet type knife.

They also threatened his 27-year-old female companion and threw a towel over her head.

The men then escaped with a sum of money taken from the female’s purse.

Police say the woman was shaken but uninjured while the man was taken to hospital for treatment to a head injury, caused by the knife, that is not believed to be life threatening.

Man Dies In Co L'Derry House Fire
A man aged in his 50s has died in a house fire in Magherafelt, Co L'Derry An investigation has been launched into the cause of the fire at a house on Highfield Road, however police said that they don't believe the fire was suspicious. The man's identity has not yet been released.

Four men arrested in connection with an explosive device in west Belfast last year have been released from custody. The device was found in the Pantridge Road area on 30 October. Three men arrested under the Terrorism Act have been released unconditionally.

Six Arrested In Dissident Investigation
Six people have been arrested by detectives investigating dissident republican activity. The arrests were made on Tuesday in the Dunmurry and west Belfast area following a number of searches. Police said five men, aged between 31 and 58, and a 32-year-old woman had been arrested.

Co Fermanagh man suffers broken nose in robbery
A Co Fermanagh man has suffered a broken nose after being assaulted by two men at his home in Enniskillen. The 65-year-old man was confronted by two men who forced their way into his home on Sunday. They then assaulted him before robbing his home. It is understood that a sum of money was taken during the robbery.

Police Officers Disciplined For Failing To Tell Doctor About Woman's Head Injuries
Two police officers have been disciplined after they failed to let their colleagues and a police doctor know that a woman had sustained a head injury, a Police Ombudsman investigation has concluded. The woman died from bleeding to the brain on 24 February 2014, the day after she suffered the injury.
