MP calls for taskforce to tackle street crime

The Government is being called on to tackle an upsurge in street crime in Belfast following a stabbing incident outside a Belfast nightclub during the week.

South Belfast MP, the Reverend Martin Smyth said he has written to the Government proposing a taskforce which would examine all aspects of street crime.

Mr Smyth said: "Anti-social behaviour and general thuggery are some of the biggest areas of concern for my constituents.

"One only has to look at this week which started off with public transport services having to be withdrawn because of fears of unruly behaviour."

Among the aspects of crime to be tackled if a taskforce is implemented are CCTV and street lighting, and the responsibilities of pubs, clubs and alcohol retailers would also be looked at under the proposed scheme.

Responding to Mr Smyth's announcement, SDLP MLA, Alisdair McDonnell stated: "People in Belfast want safe streets. Parents want their children to be able to go out and socialise at night without being attacked or becoming a victim of violence. There is a growing concern across Belfast at the level of 'street based' crime."
