Child Adoption Statistics Released
Figures on children adopted from care in Northern Ireland have been released by the Department of Health and Social Services.
'Children Adopted from Care in Northern Ireland 2011/12' contains information relating to the year ending 31 March 2012.
The key findings of the report are:
Sixty children were adopted from care during the year ending 31 March 2012, amounting to ten more than 2010’s number of 50.
In 2011/12, the average age of children adopted from care was 5 years.
The average length of time for a child to be adopted was 3 years 5 months.
There was an equal amount of children (34) adopted by foster carers in 2009/10 and 2011/12.
The proportion of foster care adoptions in the overall number of adoptions did however reduce from 68% to 57% in 2011/12.
The average age of children adopted by foster carers was 5 years 5 months. This shows an increase on 4 years 6 months for other adopted children.
The average length of time from entering care to foster care adoptions was 3 years 9 months. This was 10 months longer than for other adopted children.
Of the 34 children adopted by foster carers in 2011/12, 47% were placed for adoption within 12 months of the Health and Social Care Trust’s 'best interest' decision.

Underage drinking concerns over Derry festival
A Londonderry doctor has called for the city's Hallowe'en festival to be scrapped amid fears of a rise in underage drinking at the event. Dr Anne Doherty said that she has written to the city's SDLP Lord Mayor, Helen Quigley, to request a meeting to discuss the issue with the event's organisers.

Adopted baby death report critical of health care
A local health and social services trust has been heavily criticised over the death of a legally adopted Romanian boy. The report examined the role played by Craigavon and Banbridge Community Health and Social Services Trust into the handling of the case of David and Samuel, twin boys brought to Northern Ireland from Romania for adoption.
