MLA backs proposal for Coleraine Haemodialysis unit

East Londonderry Assembly member David McClarty has backed a proposal for a new haemodialysis unit to be developed at Coleraine.

The Department of Health’s Renal Services Review published this week suggests that while a new unit should be developed at Alnagelvin Hospital in Londonderry, two further units should also be made available, one in Coleraine and the other in the east of the Province.

Mr. McClarty said: “I fully agree with these proposals. While it was a sad day when Coleraine lost its renal services to Antrim Area Hospital, representations have often been made about the distances people living in the greater Coleraine area have to travel for treatment.

“This proposal is welcome news but as the review itself points out, it is important to emphasise that fundamental to the proposed development of the service is the recruitment and training of additional medical, nursing and support staff. This is a significant issue and one that must be addressed."
